Scope and Methods of Investigation
It is widely acknowledged that the Ukraine Crisis began on 21 November 2013 when the former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych dismissed closer trade ties with EU and turned to Russia for closer cooperation. This suspension quickly escalated into mass protests and resulted into extreme societal polarization. Violent clashes and street fightings were found in the capital Kiev with thousands arrested and hundreds dead. Within months, the crisis became an international controversy as world powers, notably Russia, were involved directly, who was accused of providing military support for separatists and rebels in Ukraine and eventually annexed Crimea without international recognition. Despite several ceasefires were signed, fightings between the pro-Russian militias and the Ukrainian troops have never halted and is still going on every day. To be precise. this website will explain the Ukraine Crisis in terms of its causes and courses, and provide an analysis on different actors involved in this controversy about their roles, rationale of joining and justifications/arguments from their perspectives. We will also discuss the moral and political significance of this crisis and its impact on contemporary society.
As for investigation methods, it is slightly different from what historians usually do when examining a past event but the framework is more or less the same. As the Ukraine Crisis is still continuing, no one can make an objective overview of the event since its consequences remain uncertain, therefore, the so-called “analysis” by the scholars can only serve as an opinion at large. In this project, in order to minimize cognitive bias, we mainly rely on news reports, especially those internationally reputable ones like BB, and officially released statistics and reports, such the UN and the Red Cross, for accurate information and facts when analyzing the causes, significance and impacts of the crisis.
